Graham Nash 曾参加过两个着名的乐团 : The Hollies 及 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Nash是英国人, 常保持如绅士般的尊严与风格. 他也很在意社会上之公平正义, 常会激励乐团中人为理想与信念而贡献力量.
以下为Nash於80 年代受访之自述:
我记得第一次听到The Everly Brothers 唱的 “Bye Bye Love” 是在学校的舞会上, 当时我正要走过舞池到对面, 可是我必须要停下来, 因为我太震惊了, 我无法走路. 我心中只有一个念头: “我也要让别人感受到我现在的感觉.”
快转到Hollies的歌曲, 当然, 他们的歌比CSNY 的歌要轻松多了. 承受的压力也不一样, 事实上, 我还真想不起来在Hollies 时候有何压力可言. 我们每天都很愉快. 我们五个是从英国北部的Manchester 逃出来的. 我们逃离了我们父亲, 以及祖父代代相传的工作. 工作40年, 领一个金表退休, 然后等死. 音乐救了我们.
所以我们不会有”你们继这个Top 10 歌曲之后, 又准备要做甚麼?”这样的压力.
60 年代末, 我个人开始改变. 1967年, 我在美国认识了Mama Cass. 她拿大麻给我, 我开始大抽特抽, 内心也会自省, 这是我被 David Crosby 吸引的原因之一. David 是一个直来直往的人, 有事一定摊开讲清楚, 即使没人问他意见, 他也会大剌剌的告诉你.
经过David, 我渐渐暸解音乐不只是创作三分鈡一首的流行曲, 这是Hollies 最在行的事. 我尝试不同Dope, 使我眼界大开, 音乐不应只谈风花雪月及汽车后座的男欢女爱, 应该有更深层的意义. 这是我决定离开 Hollies 最重要的原因.
